Northwood Turners Agenda for Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011
This is going to be a meeting/shop crawl on the 22nd at Jeff Smith’s shop, 6446 Thunder Lake Rd; Sugar Camp 715-272-1968. .
Directions: Thunder Lake Rd. is halfway between Sugar Camp route 17 and Three Lakes route 45. Thunder Lake Rd. is on the north side of A at the foot of the channel 12 TV tower. I’m the second house on the right. Bring a chair as the meeting will take place in the basement and we will then go outside and look at burls, notches and other deformed trees or whatever they are and discuss cutting. If you have a burl that you want advise on cutting, bring it along. Ron will also give us a short class on spalting wood. We will demo doing it on a maple log.

We had 2 Terry Redlin paintings donated to our club to raise money for the club. These are full size framed and matted printed, about 40" x 30". These are NOT signed and numbered but are true Terry Redlin prints. We are going to raffle them off and ticket sales start now. Price for a ticket is $5 or 3/$10 or 7/$20. We will sell tickets at the meeting and also by mail if you can't make it. If you want to buy by mail, make a check out to Northwood Turners for the amount of tickets you want and mail to me at 8247 Lost Lake Dr. West, St. Germain, WI 54558. Or you can e-mail me that you want tickets and pay later. I will put your name on the tickets you buy and they go in the drawing. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE PRESENT TO WIN. The raffle items are:

1) Terry Redlin print "Welcome to Paradise"
2) Terry Redlin print "Shoreline Neighbors"
3) Square bowl turned by Jamie Donaldson at our demo/workshop he had with our club.
4) Small bowl turned by Jamie.

Please list on your ticket request what prize you want if you are the 1st drawn, then the 2nd item, 3rd item and 4th.

We will also decide on what tools we would like to buy for the club that we could lend out to members to try. One idea is a piercing tool that we could lend out. You would buy the tip from the club and be able to use the tool. Other ideas are chatter tools, boring tools, and any other tools that may get a lot of use from the members.

I will bring info on getting a 55 gal. drum of end grain sealer. Cost if we buy a 55 gal. drum is around $6/gal. instead of $15 or higher through the catalogs. Let me know if you are interested in some sealer and how much you want.

We will also discuss what things the club may buy to be used by club members. One idea is the piercing tool. Check out the tool and then buy your own tips and try it out at home. Minutes from Jan. 20, 2010 meeting:

The meeting was called to order by President Dale Peterson at 7pm. We had 18 members and guests Roy Kelling and Rich Boersma present. There was no Secretary report as Tim headed to Haiti to help the earthquake victims but got on the wrong plane and ended up in St. Martens, POOR GUY!! George gave the treasury report. We bought a new grinding system from OneWay for $155. We will also be buying a grinder and wheels to go along with the jigs. 8 of the 20 present are not AAW members. A discussion was held on using club equipment and doing demos at the meeting. If you are not an AAW member, you are not covered by their insurance so you will not be able to check out the club lathe or grinding system. You will not be able to do demos either.

We need volunteers for future demos at the meetings. Please call me at 715-542-2012 if you would like to do a demo at one of our meetings.

Our Jan. shop crawl was held at Ed Sandle’s shop in Conover. We mainly covered different ways to sharpen tools. About 15 members turned out and brought some of their tools along to see how to sharpen them. We covered using the Wolverine grinding system, using a sandpaper disc on the lathe, and using a hone. Thanks to Ed for hosting the shop crawl.

We are still working on a workshop for airbrushing which would be $20. It would cover the workshop from 9am-3pm and include lunch. The demonstrator is still working on his shop so, in the meantime, I will try to get him to one of our meeting to do a demo. Probably in April or May.

We will also see if there is enough interest to do a woodburning get together at the St. Germain community center.

We have lost our meeting room at the community center and will still meet there but in Rm. #3 which is smaller but we will make it work. Take a left after coming in the door and into the gym and the 1st left into Rm. #3.

The Feb. shop crawl will be at Tom Martens shop in Tomahawk. The date and directions will be sent out shortly. We will probably demo the new grinding system the club bought. Tom will also demo coring.

Looks like the July picnic will be at Bill Kingsbury’s house. More details to follow. I may try to get Alan Lacer to come to our picnic and do workshops again if there is enough interest.

It was brought up that some members have had problems with stuff ordered from Don Pencil. Things were not shipped and phones and e-mails not answered. “Buyer Beware”

Our next meeting is Feb. 17th. I will be down south so Ron Warshall will run the meeting. Contact him if you would like to do a demo at the meeting 715-282-6198.

Respectfully submitted: Dale Peterson

Northwood Turners Chapter Meeting Minutes
Date: December 16, 2009

The meeting was called to order by President Dale Peterson at 7:00 p.m. Minutes and Treasury were approved.

Reminder: it's time to pay your 2010 dues, still a bargain at $20.00 for the entire year. You can give the money to any of the club officers, Dale, Tim, Ron, or George.

Sheila was presented with a gift certificate to Craft Supplies in return for her years of generosity with cookies, brownies, fudge and lots of wonderful treats. Thank you very much Sheila!

Sherry Werner spoke to us about a web service she is going to begin. She is designing a website for artists with the capability of showing art from various views. Items on the website will be for sale. She can accept uploaded pictures or will do the photography for you if you wish. She can be contacted for more information at sherryps23@msn.com and her website address is www.WarnerWebWork.com .

There were a lot of nice items on the raffle table tonight and everyone who bought a ticket won something.

Tonight’s program was put on by Paul Hansen of Eagle River. Paul did a quick demo of turning a topwater musky fishing bait. He spent the rest of his demonstration talking about choosing wood, how to measure where to put hooks, eyes (the seeing kind), eyes (the one you tie to your line), and other hardware like lips, fins, spinners, rivets, propellers and more. Paul gave us sources for purchasing hardware and finishing materials for making lures, see below. He discussed lure design, and how placement of hardware affects the behavior and success of each bait. He went on to talk about painting, finishing, and using the baits. He answered many questions, and all in all put on one of the best demonstrations we’ve had to date. Thank you Paul for your time, your generosity (see next paragraph), and a wonderful program! You’re welcome back any time.

Paul also donated a number of his Pick N’ Pick Pocket fishing tools used for untangling backlashes, (ask Dale how to use them, he’s an expert – Hah!), for our raffle.

Northwood Turners Agenda December 16, 2009

Demo: Paul Hansen is Vice President of the Headwaters Chapter of Muskies Inc. and an accomplished Musky bait maker. Paul will demo how to turn, attach hooks, and paint custom musky baits. Suick Bait Co. has been making baits for years and only makes the Suick Jerk Bait. Well, last year, Paul was the 1st person to ever get Suick to make something other than the Suick. Paul’s custom Night Walker is the only bait that Suick has ever made besides the Suick. Paul is continuously trying out new designs and his baits have caught numerous large muskies for members of the Headwaters Chapter.

The meeting is at the St. Germain Community Center. Doors open at 6pm with meeting at 7pm. Center is about 1 block north of the intersection of Hwys 70 & 155 on Hwy. 155 towards Sayner. It is on the left hand side of the road just East of the Fire Dept.
